Whether you are cruising down Route 66 / I-40 or looking for a weekend getaway in Western Oklahoma, Foss State Park is a hidden gem that deserves a spot on your family’s travel bucket list.
We recently explored this area with as a romantic weekend getaway, and it’s the perfect blend of lakeside relaxation and Route 66 history.
Here are 5 reasons why you need to visit Foss State Park!

5. Stunning Scenic Views of Foss Lake

Foss Lake is the largest lake in Western Oklahoma, and the views do not disappoint. Whether you are watching the sunrise over the 63 miles of shoreline or catching a famous Oklahoma sunset, the vistas are incredible.

We loved taking in the wide-open prairie views—there’s something so peaceful about the way the sky opens up out here.
4. Wildlife

One of the coolest things about Foss State Park is the wildlife. It’s a “birding wonderland” where you can see a a variety of birds.

We loved watching the flocks of American Coot. We honestly thought they were some kind of duck at first. It was fun to watch them swim and gather at all ends of the lake.
3. Campgrounds for Every Setup

If you’re like us and traveling with a camper—like our 2024 Jayco Jay Feather Micro—you’ll be happy to know there are plenty of spots to set up camp.

Over 110 RV sites (including 10 full-hookup modern sites) and over 100 semi-modern sites, there’s a place for everyone.
- Pro Tip: Check out the Buffalo Bend or Cedar Point campgrounds for great lake access! We loved staying at Cedar Point during our last visit.
2. The Beach Area and Palapas

Did you know Western Oklahoma has a beach? Sunset Beach at Foss State Park features a fantastic swimming area. The real standout, though, is the palapas.

These thatched-roof structures offer much-needed shade and give the whole area a tropical vibe right in the middle of the plains. They are perfect for a family picnic while the kids splash in the water.
