What is Geocaching ?

What is Geocaching ? Many people may have heard about Geocaching but have not taken the time to find out what it is.

Many people ask us about geocaching all the time. I am glad to share what it is and how to do it. Geocaching is a great free or inexpensive thing to do as a family. It is actually one of my favorite things to do outdoors overall.

Here is the official definition according to the official Geocaching website: “Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location.”

Anyone of any age can do it, all you need is a GPS, or a smartphone. With the majority of phones having a built in GPS it is easier than ever. By downloading the FREE official Geocaching app you can have access to the game. There is a free and paid version. The paid version is inexpensive and shows you all of the hidden Geocaches.

I am not someone who usually buys many apps when there are so many free ones. I did pay for a membership and for the paid app because it brings your geocaching game to the next level. You will be able to find so many more geocaches and also be able to save some on offline lists as well. (it comes in handy for areas you may not have phone signal.)

You may also be wondering why would there be geocaches hidden that only official paying members can find. It is because many people that find the free ones destroy or steal the geocaches ruining the game. The paid membership geocaches gives a feeling that the people searching for the geocache are less likely to ruin the game considering they paid to be a member.

You will be surprised how many Geocaches are hiding in your own town or area. Also please be respectful and do not damage, steal or ruin the game for us!

Go give Geocaching a try and let us know what you think!

Have you Geocached before? What do you like about it?
