How To Get an Up Close View of the Wild Sea Lions of Monterey, California

The best view of the wild Sea Lions at Monterey Coast near Fisherman’s Wharf!

Fisherman’s wharf is a cool place to stop if your visiting Monterey or cruising the coast of California on highway 1. We were thankful to experience the playfulness of the wild sea lions. Upon arrival we walked around Fisherman’s wharf and watched the locals catch mackerels and other fishes. We saw a few sea lions diving through the water and excitedly waited for another sea lion head to pop up.

Then we noticed across the water was another dock with rocks filled with sea lions. There had to be hundreds of them. We just had to get a closer look. We walked to the edge of the dock but could not spot how to get closer . There was a series of shops and boats blocking the view.

Luckily there was a friendly maintenance man who told us how to get a closer look. If you drive past Fisherman’s wharf and take the first right, you go through a short tunnel and take another right you will end up at the U.S. coast guard dock. From there you can walk the dock towards the rocks lined with sea lions.

Once we parked we excitedly walked towards the U.S. Coast Guard boardwalk. To the right of the boardwalk there was  a fence with a few Sea Lions relaxing on some rocks, but to the left there will be no fence and even more of them hanging out. That’s where we saw the baby.

You can get a closer view of the hundreds of sea lions but there is 2 sets of fences blocking the public. However, the up close view of the others are worth it!

Here is a map of where to see the best view of the sea lions.

Monterey is a great place to stop on the coast of California. Have you been there? What other places are worth stopping ?
