What’s there to do in Oklahoma?

Take a trip to the Oklahoma Maritime Education Center in Catoosa, Oklahoma!

Many people say there is nothing to do in Oklahoma, but I’m here to tell you those people are mistaken. That’s why we started our “Whats there to do in Oklahoma” series. Oklahoma actually has places to see and things to do that you may have never heard about. The Oklahoma Maritime Education Center is one of those places.

What is the Oklahoma Maritime Education Center?

The Oklahoma Maritime Education Center is an exhibit that teaches about the Tulsa Port of Catoosa and how river ports work through interactive video kiosks, informative signs, displays, and kid friendly activities. There is also a tug boat to climb on and look inside. It is completely free and located at the Tulsa Port of Catoosa in Catoosa, Oklahoma.

Our Experiences at the Maritime Education Center

Arriving at the Oklahoma Maritime Education I was surprised they did not have an attendant on site. The door was locked despite it being business hours. After attempting to get inside I heard a voice from a small speaker who said she would let me in and to open the right door. Once I got in the lights were off so I found the switch (on the right) and turned them all on. The inside the education center was outstanding.

Whats inside of the Maritime Education Center?

Informative displays and signs fill the centers walls. There are interactive video screens that show a variety of well made and informative videos.

There are two tables with art supplies and activity books. It is very kid friendly place to visit. They even have a miniature of the Tug boat for kids to climb and sit on.

The floor has a giant map of the United States showing the connected rivers that are major parts of the port and there are plenty of seats and a projector screen for presentations.

One of the most exciting parts of the Maritime Education Center is tug boat outside.

Charley Border Tug Boat

The Charley Border Tug boat is a site to see! It is named after Charley Border, the man who formed the Port of Catoosa. It was designated in 1971 and the original cost was $71000. It was eventually replaced by a newer boat which cost more than half a million.

I was not able to go in the boat but I was able to walk around its base and the lower deck. At the base there is a button you can press to light up the engine room. It’s cool seeing the engines and different rooms of the boat.

Be sure to visit it after going through the education center so you can better understand the parts of the boat and how it was used. (There is a video all about it on the interactive touch screen.)

The Port of Catoosa

It was exciting learning all about the Port of Catoosa. Living most of my life in Oklahoma it was surprising to see how much I didn’t know about a key part of our state.
