After leaving Fort Smith (Find out our Top 5 things to do in Fort Smith here) on our Gulf Coast Adventure we drove to Tupelo, Mississippi to see the Tupelo National Battlefield and then Elvis’ Birthplace. What’s there to do at the Tupelo National Battlefield?

Here you walk the battlefield and stand where history was made.

There are many informative signs, cannons and the actual battlefield. It is a small area so it doesn’t take long to see it all but, It’s a great place for photos and a quick stop on a road trip.

What is the Tupelo National Battlefield?

It is the location of the Civil War Battle of Tupelo also known as the Battle of Harrisburg fought in 1864. Over 20,000 soldiers were in the battle of Tupelo.

The Union forces marched into Tupelo. The Confederate soldiers could not overpower the troops therefore neither side won the battle. However the Union soldiers kept the Confederates away from the Union railroads in Tennessee.

Our experience at Tupelo National Battlefield

We didn’t spend a whole lot of time at the battlefield because it was much smaller than expected, but it was a great place to stop and stretch our legs.

I always love seeing the National registered areas when traveling and Cash loved seeing the old canons. We were glad we stopped to learn about our history.

Things to keep in mind

Parking

There wasn’t a parking lot when we were there. We just parked on the side of the road and walked around. It didn’t take more than a few minutes to walk around and see it all.

Expectations

Don’t expect a long exciting stop but enjoy a brief walk where history was made.
