Arkansas Missouri Railroad – From Ft. Smith to Winslow

The Arkansas Missouri Railroad Scenic Excursion is a spectacular family adventure.

The Arkansas-Missouri Railroad also known as AM Railroad is a unique family experience that will take your family on an exciting and historical adventure through the beautiful and scenic mountains and valleys of Arkansas.

The train ride we experienced runs out of Ft. Smith Arkansas to Winslow Arkansas from January 12th –  March 23 on Saturdays. It was a little over 4 hours of train riding fun! There are other options for shorter rides and departures out of other locations. But the 4 hour excursion was a perfect fit for us!

Grandma Myers, my Father Mel Myers, Kayla, Cash and I had begun quite an exceptional family experience. We boarded the train and took a seat on train car #107 rightly named the Explorer. The Explorer took us through the mountains where we saw  deer prancing through the forests, people kayaking the Frog Bayou, along with many other surprises. As we ventured over a bridge, across 3 trestles and through a tunnel we enjoyed snacks and lunch while learning many interesting train facts and local history from our wonderful conductors Al and Chuck.

Our favorite part of the Explorer train car was the open platform at back of the train car. They allowed us to stand outside and feel the wind in our hair as the train climbed the track. It was heart warming seeing Cash’s excitement and joy as we walked out onto the open platform.

Quick Tips to make your Train ride even more amazing –

  1. Feel free to ask the conductors on your train car anything, they will answer any questions and help in nearly any way possible.

  2. If you are bringing a baby or young toddler you may think of bringing along a coloring book or activity for the ride. My son Cash (4 years old) enjoyed every minute of the ride looking out the window, talking with us and playing with the conductors.

  3. As with most family adventures bring a camera or make sure your camera phone is charged up. There are many great photo opportunities.

The overall experience was AMAZING and I would recommend it to anyone at any age. I am sure we will be making another train adventure with A&M Railroad in the near future. The staff at A&M Railroad was both friendly and professional, and full of train knowledge and history of the trains and the surrounding areas. Check them out and book an excursion with them on the Official A&M Railroad Website.

How to get there is extremely important. A google search brings you to the wrong place so I provided the map below showing exactly where it is located. It is right next to the Fort Smith Trolley Museum.
