Unexpected Street Art in Fort Smith, Arkansas

Art of Downtown Fort Smith Arkansas…

It may seem like an old historic town that is still stuck in the past. But upon closer inspection Fort Smith is actually a great blend of the past and the present. Especially considering the improvements and upgrades being made to the Main Street – Garrison Ave.

When most American main streets “update” they simply add  with new restaurants and bars but Fort Smith added more than just that.

Fort Smith joined with artists from around the world and painted on many of the old brick walls. Now many walls are covered with vivid and creative works bringing new life to the historic city.  It all happened at the Unexpected Street Art Festival in 2015 which was curated by JUSTKIDS and organized by 64.6 Downtown.  I would have loved to have been there but at least the works of art can still be enjoyed by everyone visiting the historic city.

From the moment you cross the Arkansas river you begin to see it’s not the same Fort Smith you may remember. Don’t get me wrong it still has the historic charm it always has had, but now it’s blended with more modern touches.

As you take a stroll down Garrison you will see new restaurants, bars, museums, and the unexpected street art wonderfully displayed on the walls. It truly is a sight to be seen, photos just don’t do them justice. The works of art are so large most artists had to use cranes and scissor lifts just to complete them.
