Oklahoma actually has places to see and things to do that you may have never heard about. The Meadow Gold Neon Sign is one of those places.

What is the Meadow Gold Neon Sign?

It’s more than just a sign its like looking back in time. The Meadow Gold Neon Sign was erected in 1934. It was originally on a rooftop at 11th and South Lewis (Route 66) for nearly 7 decades. Each face of the sign measures 30 ft wide by 30 ft high. The sign was originally filled with argon gas but is now filled with neon gas.  It has since been moved and almost destroyed. Today its a popular spot for photographs and to imagine America in those days of milk delivery and the beginnings of route 66. Find out more about the history below.

Our Experiences at the Meadow Gold Neon Sign

We have driven by the Meadow Gold sign many times on our explorations of Oklahoma. Only recently did I make time to stop and explore the area deeper. There are many informative plaques and beautiful artwork around it.

As mentioned above the sign was erected in 1934 and has had some close calls. It was almost destroyed in 2004 until the Tulsa Foundation of Architecture received a grand from the Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program. (administered through the National Park Service).

Thankfully TFA convinced the owner of the building to provide time for dismantle of the sign for restoration and re-erection at a different location.

With the help of many private donations and funds from Vision 2025 and assistance from the Oklahoma Route 66 Association it has been restored an relocated.

The Land

The land was originally a part of Creek Indian territory. Eventually it became part of the city of Tulsa. In 1934 during the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl it became the Brinlee Grocery & Market grocery store which stood for 40 years.

After year of being a prominent grocery store it was demolished in 1983. After its destruction the lot was left open for parking.

In 2005 Markham D Ferrell inherited the land and donated the site for the Meadow Gold Sign in 2007.
